February Gallery Featured Artist, Lynn Ely

Most of you know Lynn Ely, Board Member and our  Monthly Show Coordinator at the Off Track Gallery, what a great job she does for all!

Lynn Ely was born in Stockholm Sweden, and came with her family to southern California where she attended schools in Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley.  Her B.A. degree from Calif. State Univ. at Northridge includes a specialization in art.  Her continuing studies in art include: design, ceramics, leaded stained glass, silver wire wrap jewelry, several different types of loom weaving, pine needle coiling, drawing, painting, collage, printmaking & composition.

Before her retirement in 2001, she  mentored many students  and teachers and taught art classes in drawing & mixed media.  Now Lynn has focused her time on mixed media & fiber arts.  She works constantly to hone her techniques and experiment with various new media.

“Color is ultimately important for me.  Color excites and motivates me.  Color has a lot of power.  Color is exhilarating, it creates moods, and changes feelings.  It is one of the main motivators for me to begin a new project” says Lynn.

Line, form, texture and color all come into play as she shapes a new project.  The challenge in building these creations is an unending joy. “In working with pine needles I am discovering the positive and the negative spaces that are the perimeters and the heart of the piece.  These spaces are fascinating because they themselves create more space for me to work with.  I can decide whether to fill a space, or leave it empty.  Empty or negative spaces within a sculpture can be very captivating”, says Lynn.

Lynn is now totally immersed in her art.  “It is very exciting for me to  share my work in shows and galleries”, she says.  She has won numerous awards in local juried art shows including Second Place and Honorable mention at the San Diego County Fair Fine Arts Division and First Place at the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League (COAL) Art Gallery.

Her work can be seen at the San Dieguito Art Guild’s Off-Track Gallery in Encinitas, COAL Gallery, Art Center at Fallbrook and Escondido Arts Partnership Municipal Gallery.  For more information, please email the artist. artsbylynn@yahoo.com.
